AVSP: Anti-Virus & Spam Protection

It uses a dynamic three pronged assault on spam that includes greylisting, heuristics & an anti-virus filter.

The greylisting filter works a little bit like a bouncer at an exclusive nightclub – if you’re not on the list you’ll have to wait to be allowed in. The first time an unknown mail server sends you an email it will be rejected and told to try again later. A legitimate mail server will resend the email (usually within a minute or two) and this time it will be allowed through and recorded as a known mail server so future mail is not delayed.

The Heuristic (or rules-based) filter then uses a series of rules to check the email for any indications that it might be spam. AVSP gives the message a score for every rule it breaks. When the score reaches a preset threshold the filter marks the email as spam by adding *** SPAM *** to the beginning of the email’s subject line.

The antivirus filter automatically passes the email and any attachments through an anti-virus program. If a virus is detected the email is rejected before it is sent to your computer. The ‘virus signatures’ that are used to identify viruses are automatically updated on a regular basis.
